Gout

Gout most commonly affects the great toe joint.  It can also affect other joints.  Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, redness, and a warm joint.  Gout occurs when a patient’s uric acid level becomes too high.  Treatment focuses on providing relief for the painful joint through use of medication.  A cortisone/local anesthetic injection can be very helpful in providing relief.  Treatment of an elevated uric acid will prevent future gout attacks.
